Ruth the Sloop

Sailboat with several people sailing on the sea under a cloudy sky

Holbæk Harbour - The shipyard

170 years old and has been sailing for over a century. Soon, Ruth will be prepared for more adventures.
Ruth is the world’s oldest sailing sloop and the only surviving Danish sloop left in the world. Built in Norway in 1854, it has carried timber, grain and iron goods across Scandinavia and survived war, a succession of owners and a sentence to be scrapped. Today, you can see the ship at Holbæk Harbour, where it is soon to be given a new lease of life.

Ruth is waiting, and we’re working

Right now, Ruth is waiting in our shipyard at Holbæk Harbour. Restoration work is due to begin shortly, and then you’ll be able to see for yourself what it really takes to keep a 170-year-old wooden ship afloat.

Would you like to know who Ruth is?

Ruth has sailed under the Norwegian flag, changed her name, been fitted with an engine and spent 45 years on the Limfjord – and that’s only half the story. Delve into the ship’s journey from a Norwegian shipyard in 1854 to our shipyard today.
